News Release: More than $5.3 Million Awarded from Colorado Natural Disaster Mitigation Enterprise

Fees collected from property insurance fund mitigation projects

Centennial, Colo. - In August, ten local governments were awarded $5,348,577 in natural disaster mitigation grants from the Colorado Natural Disaster Mitigation Enterprise (NDME). The ten local government agencies selected for funding included large and small agencies from around the state focusing mostly on wild fire mitigation, flood mitigation and water security. Specific awards are listed below and on the Colorado Natural Disaster Mitigation Enterprise Grant Awards map

  • Collbran Conservancy District: $339,760 | Landslide Mitigation
  • High Desert Conservation District: $770,545 | Fire Mitigation
  • Hinsdale County: $60,000 | Fire Mitigation
  • Town of Hot Sulphur Springs: $144,840 | Water Security
  • La Plata Conservation District: $850,000 | Fire Mitigation
  • Town of Lake City: $250,000 | Water Security
  • Larimer Conservation District: $850,000 | Watershed Restoration
  • Platte Canyon Fire Protection District: $850,000 | Fire Mitigation
  • Town of Snowmass Village: $850,000 | Fire Mitigation
  • Town of Superior: $383,432 | Fire Mitigation

House Bill 21-1208 established the Natural Disaster Mitigation Enterprise allowing a two dollar fee to be assessed on every property insurance policy held in the state of Colorado. Those fees are used to fund hazard mitigation grants and technical assistance to local government agencies. In total, $10,539,030 has been collected in fees based on policies held in 2022 and 2023 to support $10,128,063 in NDME grants. Fees collected for policies held in 2024 will be used to fund future grants.
